RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study quantified the expression of substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), ß-endorphins (ß-End), and methionine-enkephalin (Met-Enk) in human dental pulp following orthodontic intrusion. METHODS: Eight patients were selected according to preestablished inclusion criteria. From each patient, two premolars (indicated for extraction due to orthodontic reasons) were randomly assigned to two different groups: the asymptomatic inflammation group (EXPg), which would undergo controlled intrusive force for seven days, and the control group (CTRg), which was used to determine the basal levels of each substance. Once extracted, dental pulp tissue was prepared to determine the expression levels of both neuropeptides and endogenous opioids by radioimmunoassay (RIA). RESULTS: All samples from the CTRg exhibited basal levels of both neuropeptides and endogenous opioids. By day seven, all patients were asymptomatic, even when all orthodontic-intrusive devices were still active. In the EXPg, the SP and CGRP exhibited statistically significant different levels. Although none of the endogenous opioids showed statistically significant differences, they all expressed increasing trends in the EXPg. CONCLUSIONS: SP and CGRP were identified in dental pulp after seven days of controlled orthodontic intrusion movement, even in the absence of pain.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the cellulose production by Gluconacetobacter kakiaceti GM5 by means of two aerobic treatments: the static discontinuous fermentation process (treatment 1) and the discontinuous fermentation process in a rotary shaker (treatment 2). All these experiments were carried out using vinasse as experimental culture media (VM) and were compared with standard media containing glucose at 2% (standard medium (SM)). A sample of each treatment was extracted every 24 h over a period of 168 h. The maximum rates of cellulose produced in treatment 1 using SM added up to 3.63 ± 0.18 g l(-1), and to 4.15 ± 0.16 g l(-1) when VM was used. The amount of cellulose produced in treatment 2 using SM was 2.95 ± 0.09 g l(-1) (which suggests an increase of 37%), and added up to 1.84 ± 0.07 g l(-1) when using VM. A better global yield of both treatments in terms of sugar consumption after 168 h was obtained when using VM: 32% in treatment 1, whereas in treatment 2 it was 9%. A 20% decrease on vinasse COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) values was found to be yet another important advantage of working with this strain.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of moderate and severe orthodontic forces on calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) expression in healthy human dental pulp. METHODS: Thirty human dental pulp samples were obtained from healthy premolars in which extraction was indicated for orthodontic reasons. Before extraction, teeth were divided into 3 groups of 10 premolars each: (1) the control group: healthy premolars without application of orthodontic forces; (2) the moderate force group: a 56-g force was applied to the premolars for 24 hours; and (3) the severe force group: a 224-g force was applied to the premolars for 24 hours. All dental pulp samples were processed, and CGRP was measured by radioimmunoassay. RESULTS: Greater CGRP expression was found in the severe force group followed by the moderate force group. The lower CGRP values were for the control group. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed statistically significant differences between groups (P < .0001). Least significant difference (LSD) post hoc tests showed statistically significant differences in CGRP expression between the control group and the severe force group (P < .0001) but not with the moderate force group (P = .06). Differences between the moderate and severe force groups were statistically significant (P < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: CGRP expression in human dental pulp increases when teeth are submitted to severe orthodontic forces.
